Grand jury declines to indict former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson over Jan. 6 testimony

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A federal grand jury in Washington has refused to indict Cassidy Hutchinson, the former White House aide whose 2022 testimony to the House Jan. 6 committee described President Trump’s actions around the Capitol riot, according to The Associated Press and NBC News.

Prosecutors had sought charges over her statements about Trump’s conduct on Jan. 6, 2021. The grand jury heard evidence in early October and returned what is known as a “no bill,” rejecting the indictment. The case was brought by officials in the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

Hutchinson, a former aide to then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, has said her testimony was truthful. Part of it, an account of Trump reaching for the steering wheel of the presidential vehicle, was later disputed by Secret Service officials. Trump has called for her to be prosecuted.

The decision does not stop the Justice Department from seeking charges again. Grand juries have also declined in recent months to indict other people Trump has criticized, including New York Attorney General Letitia James.
