Nine killed as business jet crashes into Florida neighborhood
GREENACRES, Fla. — All nine people aboard a Learjet 60 were killed Sunday when the business jet crashed into a neighborhood in Greenacres, about 7 miles southwest of West Palm Beach, erupting in a large fireball.
The jet had taken off from Austin, Texas, and was headed to the Bahamas after about 2 hours and 45 minutes in the air. Those killed included a family with two young children.
A man driving near the scene suffered leg injuries. About 600 residents were displaced, and a shelter was opened for people from nearly 80 mobile homes.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating. NTSB member Tom Chapman said weather will be a major focus, along with the crew’s actions and any possible mechanical problems. The FAA had issued a weather warning earlier.
