Speaker Johnson says Republicans can keep the House as he campaigns in Maine
BANGOR, ME — House Speaker Mike Johnson dismissed predictions that Republicans will lose their narrow House majority, telling supporters in Maine on Wednesday that the party can still win in November.
“I’m telling you, we’re going to surprise them,” Johnson said at a campaign stop in Bangor, in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District. “Now we have to defy history to do this,” he added, stressing that “voter turnout is critical.”
Johnson was campaigning for Republican Paul LePage, a two-term former governor running for the open seat left by retiring Democratic Rep. Jared Golden. LePage faces Democrat Matt Dunlap, Maine’s state auditor.
Democrats say they are confident of taking control of Congress on Nov. 3 and are preparing an agenda focused on affordability and investigations of the Trump administration. A Republican-aligned super PAC has recently canceled spending in several House races while increasing it in others.
The House majority will shape the federal budget and President Trump’s legislative agenda for the next two years.
