Wildfires prompt evacuations and power shutoffs across Southern California
LOS ANGELES, CA — Fast-moving brush fires fueled by dry conditions and strong Santa Ana winds have triggered evacuation orders across parts of Southern California. Several homes caught fire as flames spread through hot, windy weather, according to the Associated Press.
Firefighters are working around the clock to contain the blazes. Forecasters warned of gusts up to 60 mph, including in Santa Clarita, and a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17.
To prevent new fires, Southern California Edison cut power to customers in high-risk areas through Public Safety Power Shutoffs. As of 7 a.m. Friday, 69,746 customers were without power: 34,946 in Los Angeles County and 34,800 in Ventura County, including parts of Malibu and Calabasas. The utility said more shutoffs are possible while conditions are monitored.
Emergency officials urge residents in affected zones to stay alert, keep phones charged and follow evacuation orders immediately.
